The Yeoju House
Korea, Yeoju
2018
This private residential project, nestled against a lush forested hillside, is an exercise in Modern Minimalism and Zen-inspired quietude. The architecture is defined by a series of clean, interlocking cubic volumes finished in a palette of warm-white stucco and textured limestone. By utilizing a restrained material language, the house acts as a neutral canvas that allows the vibrant greens of the surrounding nature to take center stage, creating a sanctuary that feels both grounded and ethereal.
The core of the design philosophy is the seamless integration of architecture and landscape. Rather than a traditional garden, nature is "carved" into the building mass through private courtyards and framed vignettes. A central light well, featuring a grove of slender bamboo and weathered wooden decking, brings soft light and organic texture into the heart of the home. This biophilic approach continues with the strategic placement of Japanese Maples and sculptural pines, which provide seasonal color and poetic silhouettes against the sharp, geometric lines of the facade.
